FAQs

Are you interested in taking an Online Belt Training but not sure if it’s right for you? This handy sheet of FAQs should hopefully provide you with an overview of how the courses work and how you’ll benefit.

General FAQs

Are there prerequisites for any of the belts? In other words, do I need to get certified as a Green Belt prior to enrolling in the Black Belt certification course? 
You can immediately enroll in the course that is most suitable to you. Each course starts with foundational level information that gives you grounding to move on to the more advanced elements. You are not required to have any prior experience or certification, though we do often have students who are currently Green Belts before they pursue Black Belt certification. It’s truly a matter of personal preference.

How do I get certified? Are there additional requirements for Black Belt Certification?

  • All courses-Complete the virtual course and capstone project sessions.
  • All courses-Complete all online courses with a minimum post ‐ test score of 80%.
  • All courses-Complete the certification exam with a minimum score of 80%.
  • Black Belt Certification only-Complete a project and successfully present the project to the instructor and Master Black Belt. (Additional details available under BLACK BELT FAQS.)

 

Do I have to set up a PayPal account? 
No; you can go through the entire payment process and never have to set up a PayPal account. If you need any additional payment processing assistance, please contact ltaylor@thequalitygroup.net .

I’m interested in your course but want to make sure I can schedule around the class times. How can I get a detailed agenda with dates and times? 
Email pexinstitute@pexnetwork.com and we’ll be happy to provide you with the detailed agenda for any of our upcoming courses. Simply specify which course (or courses) you’d like.

Are there any books or outside materials that need to be purchased? 
The reference materials are included as PDF files which accompany the e-Learning portion of the class. You may download and print these as needed. Files will also be provided for the virtual classroom sessions. A list of suggested (not required) books will be provided prior to class. Additionally, you will have one year access to all of the online modules for your course. Support files, spreadsheets, and templates are provided for use during and after class.

Are there any additional online resources available? 
In addition to the PDF student guides supplied with each online module, Quality Tools Online is an extensive reference of tools, applications and examples accessible from any browser, iPad or Android operating system.

What access will I have to experts? Who will instruct the course?
Classes are kept small to provide one to one support as needed. The Master Black Belt/Instructor is available from the beginning of the class through the completion of the project. Questions are answered via phone, e-mail, chat sessions and during weekly live virtual classes.

A member of the Master Champion Network, including industry leaders and experts in manufacturing, service, healthcare, supply chain, statistics and project management, will instruct the course.

What is the relationship and history between PEX Institute and The Quality Group (TQG)? 
When PEX Institute decided to offer training based upon customer feedback, they chose TQG to provide both the content and the instructors. TQG has been delivering blended learning for Lean Six Sigma/Process Improvement for over 20 years, since 1992 when we launched from IBM. What is the Capstone project?
A rigorous team-oriented project simulation featuring hands-on tool usage, data analysis, simulations and toll gate reviews.

Is industry emphasis available?
Small class size allows some customization for individual student needs in industries such as: manufacturing, administrative, service and healthcare. Additionally, there may be opportunities to customize a class to a specific organization’s needs if enough students are available to complete the course together. What body of knowledge does this course follow?
In all development, the ASQ body of knowledge is used. The Lean content of the course is reviewed by ASQ and Six Sigma modules are reviewed by other industry leaders.

What tools are used for Statistical Analysis?
The Black Belt and Green Belt courses will be taught with Minitab 16. Under certain conditions, SigmaXL is a Green Belt option. Each student will be expected to secure a licensed copy of Minitab prior to the statistical portion of the class (Session 4).

 

We can provide additional information as needed to students who on how best to secure Minitab if you do not currently have a license.

 

What if my company is already using another statistical software package?
You can use other statistical software packages. Please contact the instructor to work out the details of this and what your requirements are.

 

What IT requirements are there?
There are a few things you will need to ensure the best possible learning experience including:

  • A computer, either a laptop or desktop
  • Office 2007 (minimum)
  • Adobe reader (for pdf documents)
  • Statistical Software (Minitab) – runs on Windows [PC or Parallels on Mac]
  • A good internet connection
  • A good phone line, either a land line or mobile phone will work.  Our online meeting software will connect your phone with the class session.  If you are using a mobile phone, be aware that your minutes will add up quickly, so be sure to have a plan which will cover the duration of the course.
  • A telephone headset with a microphone attached works best; an inexpensive one will work. 
  • A location relatively free from background noise and interruptions, if possible.

 

Black Belt Certification FAQs

What are the requirements for Black Belt Certification?

  • Complete the 16 week virtual course and capstone project sessions.
  • Complete all online courses with a minimum post-test score of 80%.
  • Complete the certification exam with a minimum score of 80%.
  • Complete a project and successfully present the project to the instructor and Master Black Belt.

How do I select a project and what are the requirements?

You can select a project for your organization or company, or for a non-profit or local charity. You will need to have access to the process and the data necessary to complete the project requirements. You will need to present the project to the management team of the company or organization. Implementation must be planned but does not have to be fully executed.

Are there project deliverables throughout the course?

There are several project deliverables. The Instructor will review each deliverable and may return it for additional work if needed.

  • Project concept or idea, due at the end of session 2
  • Project Charter due at the end of the week of session 4

The following are guidelines and may vary depending on the complexity of the project:

  • Measure phase, project baseline, due at the end of the week of session 9
  • Project plan for completion of remaining tasks, due at the end of the week of session 16

As a Black Belt candidate, what are my responsibilities?

As a black belt student you are responsible for contacting the instructor for additional review or assistance if needed. You will also need to schedule and conduct local management reviews of your project. When the project is completed you will need to provide the instructor a copy of the final project and arrange for a final review.

Will there be help if I need it on my project?

The instructor will be available to guide and coach you through the project.

Is there additional statistical software required for the course?

How much time should I devote to the course and project work?

The expectations are high and the course and project work can be demanding. The course is very rigorous and will require that you devote time each week to working on your project as well as completing the online and virtual classes. When you enroll, be sure the course fits in your calendar and can be completed with your other priorities.
